Tips for Law Firm Leaders Considering Change Management Programmes in their Firm

Change is the ever constant for those involved in law firm management, as those law firms that opt for the status quo are losing ground to their competition. But what about the diligent staff of a typical law firm? What should law firm leaders do, to prepare staff for necessary business changes?

In this article Ian Hopkins Senior Associate Consultant at cpm21 gives three tips which may ease the process for law firm leaders considering introducing a change management programme in their firm.

  1. Communication - We have all heard the expression “some people do change better than others,” but for some the mere mention of the word “change” within a workplace setting can make them feel fearful, threatened and noncooperative.

    Change is part of the cycle of continuous improvement within your firm, so focus on continuous improvement in your communications with staff.

    Aim to avoid using the word “change” altogether and instead use “continuous improvement” to reduce the risk of some staff feeling alienated.

  2. Engagement - Before implementing a programme of continuous improvement in your firm engage with and involve staff doing the job first.

    Aim to build a sense of common purpose and engagement with your staff for what you are trying to achieve within your firm.

    It is likely to be your staff who will implement the change, so ask them for their views either on a one-to-one basis or in a series of workshops and demonstrate that you have heard them – In my experience they will be pleased to be involved and you will get better results in the long term.

  3. Authenticity – As leader have open and honest conversations with your staff, aiming to gain their buy in, and win their hearts and minds.

    Be an authentic leader, always ensuring that your actions align with the values of the business and your staff. If you lack authenticity as leader, you run the risk of your staff not following you and leaving your firm.

By following these three points law firm leaders will give themselves a better chance of success in driving through the changes necessary to stay ahead of the competition.
